Moss' guide to jacket linings

Because linings are more than just aesthetics.

Have you ever looked at the inside of your suit jacket and thought 'why isn't it finished properly?' No, it's not a mistake - there are plenty of reasons why a jacket is lined in a particular way (or not at all). From structure, to weight, to how it hangs on your body, linings are essential to the look and feel of your jacket. Let's take a look at some of the linings we offer at Moss.

Unlined

It’s easy to assume that unlined jackets are lower in quality or simply a cost-cutting measure. In reality, they’re intentionally designed with a refined finish. If you look closely, you’ll notice that most unlined jackets actually boast meticulous detailing. Moss' unlined jackets, for example, feature elegant piping along the back of the jacket, and a single piece of viscose-blend lining across each shoulder, adding a touch of shape. Unlike fully lined suits, any mistakes in the stitching or fabric can't be hidden with linings, so they require a lot more finessing.

The primary benefit of unlined jackets is their lighter weight. With less lining, they’re perfect for summer occasions, offering comfort and breathability, with less bulk. They also have a more relaxed structure, creating a softer drape that hangs more fluidly than a lined jacket.

Unlined jackets tend to me more delicate than their lined counterparts, so take care when wearing and washing them.

Buggy lined

Moss' buggy, or "butterfly," linings offer more structure than unlined jackets. Featuring curved panels across the top of the shoulders that resemble butterfly wings, the lining extends down the jacket sides for added shape. The back, however, is left unlined, enhancing breathability and creating a more fluid drape.

Much like unlined suits, buggy lined suits are also great for the warmer season.

Fully lined

The classic style that works whatever the season, fully lined suits are ones you'd have seen and worn many times before. They're lined all the way across the back and shoulders, through the sleeves and down the sides, often with a silky, smooth cloth.

Fully lined suits are often a bit heavier than unlined or buggy lined suits due to the extra fabric. However, they have a much cleaner appearance, which may suit more formal occasions.

The great thing about linings? You can customise them - order a Custom Made suit and you'll have a whole lot of linings to choose from, ranging from simple block colours, to florals, all the way to peacock print. It's great if you're looking to inject a little personality into your wedding suit, or want a suit jacket that'll be the talk of any party you wear it too.
