Trending: Western style

Here's how to get the Western look.

We’re calling it - the Western clothing style is going to rule menswear this year. Between Pharrell’s cowboy-core looks at a certain French Maison and watching Timothée Chalamet in Dylan-esque suede and denim in A Complete Unknown, pop culture’s Americana obsession is reaching new heights.

The look itself appears effortless - just throw on a pair of pair of beaten-up bootcut jeans and a white t-shirt, right? Well, if you really want to perfect this style, there’s a little more that you need to consider.

Here’s how to do the Western clothing style right.

Dress from the bottom up

While the rest of your ensemble is undeniably important when dressing Western, it won’t matter if you don’t have the right shoes on. So, we recommend building your outfit from the bottom-up.

Start with Westerm style footwear. You don't need to go too on the nose and go for a cowboy boot, though - low boots, brogues or chunky loafers are also great options. If you want to branch out, go for a suede shoe as a nod to Elvis, like our Cambridge leather loafers.

Choose a trouser

Next up is choosing a trouser that fits the brief. It’s got to be something that feels structured but could easily look at home on the back of a Harley Davidson. It’s a good idea to opt for more lived-in-looking styles here. Denim or chinos are great, but we love moleskin trousers for an elevated edge.

Shirts

As mentioned, a t-shirt is the quintessential top layer when it comes to Western styling, but we prefer something that feels a touch more elevated and versatile to meet the needs of a modern man.

A brown or navy striped button-up complements this aesthetic perfectly and makes the outfit just a little more practical, fitting right in at a social gathering or semi-casual office environment.

The final layer

Outerwear is where you can really have some fun and get creative. But, with that said, there is one rule you need to follow if you want to avoid throwing off the Western vibe: pay attention to textures - it’s got to feel a bit rugged and lived in. A suede or corduroy overshirt achieves this effortlessly.

Best Western

If you want to style the best Western outfit you possibly can, the key is to remember where this look comes from. It’s a style rooted in generations of Americana, folk music, and rough-and-ready cowboy aesthetics. It’s both effortlessly urban and countrified, so make sure that when you’re styling, you keep things versatile. Have fun and get creative – it’s a forgiving style that has many avenues and opportunities for self-expression.
